INTRODUCTION TO URODYNAMICS I: Lower Urinary Tract Anatomy and Physiology
Urinary Tract Anatomy

The urinary system is divided into two separate systems, the UPPER URINARY TRACT and the LOWER URINARY TRACT.

  1. The UPPER URINARY TRACT is composed of the kidneys and ureters. It functions to filter the blood of water soluble waste and produces urine.
  2. The LOWER URINARY TRACT is composed of the bladder, urethra and urethral sphincters. It functions to store and eliminate urine.

Urodynamic procedures evaluate function of the LOWER URINARY TRACT. Understanding urodynamics begins with understanding lower urinary tract anatomy and physiology.
