UROFLOW - "The Big Picture"

Uroflowmetry is:

  • Performed to demonstrate the result of the EMPTYING PHASE of the micturition cycle
  • Considered to be a screening test only
  • Followed by further testing when results are abnormal

The ICS terms used for Uroflow are Q (Flow) and QVol (Voided Volume).

  • The Flow Channel (Q or Qura) demonstrates the velocity at which urine is evacuated and is measured in cc/sec.
  • The Voided Volume channel (QVol) demonstrates the amount of urine voided and is measured in cc's.

The flow patterns are described as continuous or intermittent.

Flow time is the time over which measurable flow actually occurs. When the voiding pattern is intermittent, flow time must be calculated.

Voiding time is the total duration of micturition, including interruptions. When voiding is completed without interruption, voiding time is equal to flow time.

The Siroky and Liverpool (Haylen, et al) nomograms are commonly used to intrepret uroflow studies.

Following are some sample uroflow analyses.
